Most Dangerous Websites Revealed

Anti-virus software company McAfee has unveiled a list of the world’s most dangerous websites in a report on the security of top-level domains.

The research shows that Romania is the most risky large country domain with 5.6 per cent dangerous sites. This is followed by Russia with 4.5 per cent.

Another finding was that the domain name .info is the riskiest generic domain, with 7.5 per cent of its sites rated as risky by McAfee. The popular domain name .com is the second most unsafe, with 5.5 per cent of sites rated as risky.

Websites are classed as dangerous by McAfee if they fail one or more tests for malicious downloads, spyware, adware, unwanted email or excessive pop-ups.

Mark Maxwell, senior product manager at McAfee Consumer and Small Business, said: ‘When it comes to safety, it turns out that the web is no different than the physical world. There are safe neighbourhoods and safe web domains, and then there are places no one should ever visit.’

A survey conducted by McAfee last year found that 97 per cent of internet users could not differentiate between safe and unsafe websites.
